Low back pain is very common and is often experienced while standing. Pain while standing can be very limiting in terms of your work and social life. In people experiencing low back pain while standing, tightness through the hip can often be the problem.

If you’re sitting down for prolonged periods of time, the muscles at the front of the hip (hip flexors) can become tight and they then pull on the low back when you’re standing.  Try stretching your hip flexors in a kneeling lunge position. Kneel on one leg and lunge the other leg forward so that front foot is contacting the ground, and both knees are bent to approximately 90 degrees. Then, while keeping your chest raised, lunge your body weight forward so that you feel a stretch through the front of your back leg. Hold for 30-60 seconds and repeat for the other leg.
